RIP, Mr. Bays. Amidst a talented team, Steve was a dominating presence as the Rams went undefeated in '68 league play & battled into the CIF playoffs, a 25-3 season. Steve was a mainstay in the starting lineup. Millikan took on every opponent w/ confidence & belief that victory would be had after 4 quarters. At 6-feet and forever inches tall, Steve worked as hard as anybody to add to his basketball endurance. I remember him routinely jumping the football stadium chairs w/ weights strapped to his Converse shoes. Thanks for the memories, Steve.

Steve Bays was one of my first boyfriends in junior high school. He always treated me with such respect. We had loads of fun and even got into trouble in school a few times together. I remember that he really loved his family especially his older sister who he thought was just beautiful. If we hadn't broken up in high school he would have been winning a lot of basket ball games for Wilson High School, my alma mater. I have nothing but fond memories of our young relationship.

Steve and I met in 7th grade in Ken McKee's art class at Hill Jr. High (Mark McKee's Dad).  He was gregarious even then with a size to match.  He was also totally uncoordinated and at 6' 4" had grown a foot between 6th and 7th grade.  We imediately got on his case to come out for basketball, finally talking him into it and in the beginning he was just terrible!

Finally, eighth grade rolls around and Steve, still growing became our second string center and through the course of the season gradually improved to a starter roll as we fought and won our leage championship only to lose to Stanford Jr. High with their great team of Jim Ferguson, Don Keller, Mark McKee, and the other talented kids that almost all went on to Millikan after leaving Jr. High.  However, we did come back and win the 9th grade championship against that same Stanford team and by then Steve was on his way to the "big" leagues.

Most all of us knew Steve, you couldn't miss him on campus, as he joined the great basketball tradition of coach Lyons and went on to win Moore League Championships and deep runs into CIF.  Steve never stopped mproving his game from the time he started to when he finished.

My memories of Steve Bays will always be filled with his joyful personality.  Sometimes, off the wall, but never mean or angry, Steve had kind words for everyone.  I'll never forget him comming into class one morning wearing the X-Ray glasses;  you know, the ones always in the back of the comic books, that wouldshow you looking through clothing.  Steve made a dramatic statement with all the girls that day!  What a crackup!

I met Steve in Junior High School as he was on the Hill and I was on the Stanford basketball teams. We both ended up at Millikan. Steve was very dedicated to improving his game and was a better center than myself. I was eventually cut from the team, but remained a fan. RIP Steve.

Steve was a great guy- l

Steve was like a lot of us, we didn't know which direction to go, and Steve had a lot of options with his height and a great personality.   Eventually he committed to basketbal and became a star in our community- his legend lives today-  You could see him transform himself in the likeness of his team mates and coashes - taking the best and gaining great skills in that direction.  This commitment was his halmark and it made him a success in Long Beach and it had to make him a success  whereever  and whatever field he would end up in.  I had always hoped to re-connect later in life with him relish our experiences, but got busy and moved out of the area, now that I am back.   I regret that will not not happen until we meet again in the  hearafter.     Best regards to all who knew him and for the loss, and our loss.Steve may you rest in peace.  I hope you realized some of your dreams.
