In Memory of…

Robert C Schiller

Robert C Schiller

Baby Boy Schiller was born in Duluth, MN on June 17, 1950. He spent his first three years in Superior, WI before he and his family moved to Long Beach, CA. He loved to tell people how Duluth had the closest hospital from his home in Superior. While he never lived there, Duluth held a special place in his heart and he was a Minnesota Vikings fan.

Baby Boy Schiller corrected his birth certificate when he was 55 years old, to Robert Charles Schiller. Everyone who knew him called him Bob. The events following 9/11 required Bob to get a passport for his regular cruises to Mexico and this is when he found out his parents had never gone back and officially named him after his birth.

Growing up, Bob loved playing basketball in the backyard with his siblings. He also loved playing Cowboys and Indians; especially the year they brought all of the neighbor’s Christmas trees from the curb to their yard to make a forest. His first job was a paper route in his neighborhood on his bicycle.

Bob graduated from Millikan High School in 1968. His claim to fame was his role as Sitting Bull in his high school play, Annie Get Your Gun. Following high school graduation, Bob enlisted in the Army in 1969 and served as a Military Policeman in the Vietnam War. He was honorably discharged in 1971. He proudly displayed his service with this personal automobile license plate – Old MP.

Following his discharge from the military, he went to college. He graduated from the California State University, Long Beach, with a Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting in 1979, with the loving support of his wife, Karen. Bob was a member of MENSA following his graduation from CSULB through his retirement from the CSU Chancellor’s Office in 2016.

Bob and Karen met in an accounting class at Long Beach City College in 1972. Bob asked, “Weren’t you in my last class?” Karen rolled her eyes and it took Bob several months to get a first date. Not surprisingly, their first date was to a basketball game. They were married on February 9, 1973 and 9 months and 18 days later their only child, Kristy, was born.

Bob’s only grandchild, Abigail, was born in 1995. After Abigail’s birth, Grandpa Bob found his knack as the baby whisperer and not only calmed Abigail often, but also started volunteering in his church nursery. As Abigail’s primary male role model, their bond ran deep.

Bob and Karen were avid supporters of Long Beach State Athletics. They could be found loudly cheering from the front row of all the games at the Pyramid and Blair Field. They loved their players. At one time, Bob was the Booster Club President for the Women’s Basketball Team. Go Beach!

After Karen’s untimely passing in 2012, Bob moved to Leisure World in Seal Beach, CA. He loved his community and neighbors. He made friends with the squirrels and bunnies by illegally feeding them on his front porch.

Bob passed away suddenly in his home on April 10, 2018. He is survived by his daughter, Kristy Schiller; granddaughter, Abigail Schiller; brothers Roger Schiller and Ronald Schiller (Sandy Schiller); sister Diane Norberg (Ron Norberg); and many nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews. He was preceded in death by his wife, Karen Schiller and brother Gary Schiller.

His memorial service was on April 21, 2018 at St. Timothy Lutheran Church, 4645 Woodruff Ave., Lakewood, CA. A private family interment took place at Riverside National Cemetery, with Military Honors.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be directed in Bob’s memory to Long Beach State Athletics. giveto.csulb.edu
